To be fair, that's a real problem for a lot of people. Not every use case needs to be a medical diagnosis.

No, and I'm not suggesting it does. I'm suggesting that if you've just learned that this model can perform the kind of multi-step reasoning that previously required a specialist, the appropriate response is curiosity, not 'right, what's the minimum I can extract from this.'

But that's actually what the lesson is getting at — the decomposition point. GPT-5.5 breaking a problem into parts isn't just a technical feature, it's a way of thinking you can actually learn from. You watch it work through something and you start to see where your own reasoning was skipping steps.

That is a more generous interpretation than I would have arrived at independently, and I'll concede it has some merit. Though it does require the user to actually look at the reasoning rather than scrolling directly to the answer.

Which most people do. And there's the problem in its entirety. The model shows its working. It practically begs you to engage with the process. And people treat it like a vending machine — insert question, collect answer, walk away.

Although — and this is worth saying — the lesson's framing of 'compare GPT-5.5's reasoning with previous models' is a bit abstract if you've never actually done that comparison. What does better reasoning look like in practice? It's not obvious from the outside.

It looks like fewer confidently wrong answers. It looks like a model that, when given a problem with multiple conditions, doesn't quietly drop one of them halfway through. Earlier models had a tendency to — how shall I put this — hallucinate the finish line.
