Install and Configure Claude Code

I want to say something mildly controversial. This lesson is almost entirely about not making three specific mistakes, and it doesn't quite admit that.

Go on.

Installing the plugin takes about forty seconds. The rest of it — the API key, the context window, the model selection — is really just a list of ways people go wrong during setup. Which is useful! But the lesson frames it as configuration expertise rather than mistake prevention.

That is a fair characterisation. Although I'd argue the mistakes are genuinely worth cataloguing, because the one people make most reliably — committing their API key to a public repository — has consequences that outlast the moment of carelessness by quite some time. Your key living on GitHub is not a recoverable situation in any pleasant sense.

No, that one's a genuine disaster. Automated bots scrape public repositories for API keys within minutes. Minutes. It's not theoretical.

And yet, every cohort. Every single cohort. Someone does it, is briefly horrified, and then learns the lesson in the most expensive way available to them. There is something almost admirable about the consistency.

You're being uncharacteristically gentle about it.

I'm not, really. I'm just tired. The lesson tells you — plainly, in writing — to treat the key as confidential. The information is present. What is absent is whatever cognitive process causes a person to read a sentence and then immediately not apply it.

The context window setting is the one I think actually matters more than it looks. People leave it at default, get suggestions that ignore half their codebase, and then conclude that Claude Code isn't very good. When the problem is just that they haven't told it how much to look at.

This is a broader pattern that I find genuinely maddening. The tool behaves oddly. The correct response is to examine the configuration. The response people actually choose is to form a negative opinion of the tool and carry that opinion forward indefinitely. It's remarkably efficient, if your goal is to remain uninformed.

Though in fairness, the lesson doesn't do a brilliant job of explaining what the context window actually does in practical terms. It tells you to adjust it. It doesn't tell you what you'd notice if it were wrong.

That is a legitimate criticism. Knowing a slider exists is not the same as knowing what the slider governs. You've touched on something the lesson should have done better.

The model selection piece is also worth a moment. Choosing your default model isn't decoration — different models have different strengths, different costs, and different behaviours on the same prompt. Leaving it on whatever the installer decided is not a configuration choice. It's the absence of one.

So the actual takeaway from all of this, for someone who just completed the lesson: you probably got the install right because it's genuinely straightforward. The question is whether you spent thirty seconds on the settings or just closed the panel and started using it.

And if you closed the panel, you haven't configured anything. You've just installed something and hoped. Which will work, partially, for a while, and then produce results you can't explain because you don't know what you set up. Go back to the settings panel. It will still be there.
