Apple's Siri Finally Got Its AI Rebuild

Apple has shipped the Siri rebuild it promised over a year ago — iOS 27 lands today with an assistant that can actually read your screen and act across apps.

What Changed

Siri AI, released as part of iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27 and visionOS 27, can now read what is on your screen, dig through Messages, Mail and Photos for context, and take actions inside apps like WhatsApp and Audible. It launched as an English-only beta, and Apple built the underlying models alongside Google's Gemini, running on-device and on Apple's own privacy-focused servers.

The Twist: Siri May Not Stay Apple's Brain

Code inside the private iOS 27 and macOS frameworks shows Apple built a "Model Delegation" system that lets Siri hand off a request to a different AI model — Claude or GPT-5.6 have both been named — while keeping Siri's own voice and interface. A demo has already shown ChatGPT finding emails and texting a contact through Siri's own tools. None of this is user-facing yet, but the hooks are already shipping.

What This Means for Learners

This is a preview of where every AI assistant is heading: the interface you talk to and the model doing the thinking are becoming separate, swappable layers. Understanding that split — which is exactly how tools like Claude Code let you choose a model — is becoming a genuinely useful piece of AI literacy, not just a technical detail.
