I want to say upfront — this is actually a genuinely useful setup. Getting Claude inside your IDE rather than tabbing out to a chat window every thirty seconds is not a trivial quality-of-life improvement.

The settings customisation section is where I think people actually make or break this for themselves. There's a real tendency to install everything at the defaults and wonder why the suggestions feel intrusive or miss the point.

Yes. The default settings are designed for the median user, which means they are optimised for someone who is not you, working on a project that is not yours, in a style that is probably not yours. Treating them as a finished product is a specific kind of laziness.

That said, I don't think the lesson is completely clear on what 'optimal' actually looks like in practice. It tells you to customise, but the guidance on how to know when you've got it right is fairly thin.

Don't strain yourself.

The honest answer is that calibration is iterative and personal, and no lesson can fully prescribe it. What the lesson can do — and does — is tell you which dials exist and what they affect. The tuning is on you. If you find that uncomfortable, I'd gently suggest that software development may present you with further discomforts down the line.

The debugging integration is the part I find most interesting. Because that's where people tend to be most resistant — there's something about debugging that feels like it should be entirely human. Like outsourcing it is admitting defeat.

Which is a romantic notion that costs people hours. Claude is not doing the thinking for you when it helps you find a missing semicolon. It is doing the part of the thinking that was never interesting to begin with.

Although there's a version of over-reliance worth naming. If you stop being able to read an error message without reaching for the AI, that's a skill quietly eroding.

Agreed. The integration is a lever, not a replacement for understanding what the lever is attached to. People who skip the fundamentals and go straight to AI-assisted everything tend to build impressive-looking things that collapse the moment something novel goes wrong. The lesson doesn't dwell on this, which is either a reasonable scope decision or an oversight, and I have my suspicions about which.

On that cheerful note — if you've done the setup and it's sitting there working, actually use it for a day before deciding whether you've configured it correctly. You'll know within an hour whether something needs adjusting.
