To be fair, that's how most developers learned. You open something, you poke at it, you break it, you learn. The issue is that Cursor specifically rewards people who understand where the AI chat sits in relation to the editor.

That is a reasonable point, and I will not pretend otherwise. The Windsurf AI panel is not decorative. It is load-bearing. If you treat it as a sidebar curiosity rather than a core part of the workflow, you are using roughly forty percent of what you paid for.

Which is why the customisation section matters more than it sounds. Fonts and themes feel trivial until you realise someone coding at midnight on a white background is making decisions that affect their concentration at hour three.

I will concede that environment does affect output. Reluctantly, because it sounds like the kind of thing people say to justify spending two hours choosing a colour scheme instead of writing anything.

There's a difference between deliberate setup and procrastination dressed as productivity. The lesson keeps the customisation section mercifully short for exactly that reason.

The integrated terminal is the piece that surprises people, incidentally. They expect to context-switch — write code, open a separate terminal, run something, come back. The realisation that you do not have to leave the IDE appears to produce a disproportionate amount of joy for what is, objectively, a fairly standard feature.

It's not about the feature, it's about the flow. Every time you switch windows you lose something — not much, but it compounds. Removing that friction is more valuable than the feature description suggests.

You're being generous with the word 'compounds.' But yes. Fine. The terminal being embedded is worth understanding as a workflow principle, not just a location to memorise.

The mental model framing is what I'd take away from this lesson more than anything else. It's not 'here are four tabs' — it's 'here is the spatial logic of how AI-assisted coding is structured.' That's a different kind of knowledge.

It is. And it is the kind of knowledge that either clicks in the first hour or doesn't click until six months in when someone finally explains it. The lesson is attempting to compress that timeline. Whether the reader allows that to happen is, as ever, largely up to them.
